Solar Programs

The Solar Program promotes the use of solar energy for the generation of electricity and for other heating applications. This program comprises both on-site as well as utility-scale solar power generation.

Ras Al Khaimah offers a major potential opportunity for development of solar power generation capacities. Strong solar irradiation with over 300 days of sunshine a year, availability of land and an abundance of low-rise buildings with suitable roofs contribute to a highly favourable natural setting for efficient solar generation. The Solar Program has been designed to help overcome these barriers through regulatory support, pilot projects, and capacity building initiatives in the initial years, while preparing for larger-scale deployments in the future.

Both on-site and utility-scale solar capacity deployment is expected to be supported by regulations setting the conditions for connection of renewable energy plants to the grid, as well as building readiness requirements that are already part of the green building regulations, Barjeel. Reem drives the program by facilitating solar project development and by supporting the design of regulations.

The objectives of this program are to achieve the targeted renewable energy generation through the deployment of at least 600 MWp of on-site solar power generation capacity, and 600 MWp of utility-scale solar power generation capacity by 2040.
