This programme aims to strengthen monitoring of Ras Al Khaimah’s existing protected areas and establish new ones to support keystone and endangered species. Khor Al-Mazahmi, the emirate’s existing protected area spanning over 3 km2, is home to 10,000 mangroves and 475 tagged green turtles. Six additional sites have been proposed to safeguard species such as the hawksbill turtle, green turtle, and Emirati leaf-toed gecko, and to conserve ecologically important areas like Khor Al Hulaiyla and Wadi Mazraa.
Key activities include continuous surveys to assess the status of existing flora and fauna, the reintroduction of locally extinct species, and the development of protected areas. The programme targets population stabilisation of keystone species by 2030.
