RAK Municipality holds the first GBR consultation workshop

Ras Al Khaimah Municipality Department, in the presence of a number of delegates from government and private organisations from concerned sectors in the UAE, has organised the first Green Building Regulations (GBR) consultation workshop.

Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, January 31, 2018: “The Government of Ras Al Khaimah has put an implementation strategy to energy efficiency and sustainability, which comes in line with the UAE National Agenda 2021 and the Green Growth Strategy. This coincided with the steps already taken by other Emirates, where a strategy was built to make Ras Al Khaimah more competitive across all sectors,” H.E. Munther Mohammed bin Shekar Al Zaabi, Director-General of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality Department stated during the opening speech of the 1st GBR Consultation Workshop.

H.E. Munther Mohammed bin Shekar has reaffirmed that a dedicated administration was created within the Municipality Department to drive the energy efficiency and renewable energy strategy. An Executive Committee, comprising some local and federal government entities, has been established, in addition to identifying a set of key programs that we will be working on as part of our strategy, including building retrofits, energy management, efficient appliances, water reuse and efficient irrigation, solar rooftop PV and others; while stressing that this vision can only be achieved with all concerned parties united in one team.

Mr. Andrea Di Gregorio, Director of the Energy Efficiency & Renewables Administration, has clarified the roadmap and the motivation behind the initiative, which will positively affect the economy, including decreasing energy costs for residents and companies, and enhancing the local market for green products and services. He added that the green building regulations, once defined and implemented, will support the next phase of the building regulations in Ras Al Khaimah, supporting RAK Municipality Vision: “A leading Municipality, for a sustainable environment.”

Discussion panels took place aiming to discuss different regulatory choices and approaches to promote green buildings in the Emirate.

At the end of the workshop, a thank you note was presented to participating entities, reaffirming the benefits of the collaborative approach that the Municipality is adopting in the development of green building regulations.
