Ras Al Khaimah Municipality and Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ) awarded the winners of RAK Energy Innovation Competition (School Edition)

​​The competition supported by RAK Education Zone and approved by the UAE Ministry of Education gave students a break from traditional classroom learning, while incubating innovation in the field of sustainability.

 

Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, December 17, 2020: An award ceremony was held at the premises of RAKEZ, following social distancing measures, to felicitate the winners of the school edition of RAK Energy Innovation Competition (#RAKInnovates). The ceremony witnessed attendance from senior government officials, winners of the competition and media representatives.

The competition, organised by Ras Al Khaimah Municipality and sponsored by RAKEZ comprised two challenges catering to all school cycles and was kicked off in January 2020. Over 50 schools participated and more than 100 submissions were received from students.

Through their submissions, students showcased innovative ideas on how to promote energy and water savings in Ras Al Khaimah communities. An evaluation panel, composed of members of the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Committee of Ras Al Khaimah, assessed and selected the most deserving ideas.

The winners and runners-up of the RAK Energy Innovation Competition (School Edition) are as follows:

Monica Moreira, the school coordinator from St. Mary's Private High School Ras Al Khaimah, was also recognised for her outstanding support on raising awareness on energy efficiency and encouraging students to participate.

His Excellency Munther Mohammed bin Shekar, Director General of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality said, “We believe it is important to instill the sustainability mindset at an early age. We want the youth to understand sustainability challenges and be motivated to tackle them with innovative solutions when they grow up. Through this initiative, we are taking first steps to engage students in sustainable activities and contribute towards Ras Al Khaimah Energy Efficiency & Renewables Strategy 2040. I would like to congratulate all the winners and runners-up of this competition and encourage them to continue their efforts to make Ras Al Khaimah more sustainable."

RAKEZ was the official sponsor of the competition and its Group CEO, Ramy Jallad said, “We are thrilled to be part of this event that encourages the younger generation to explore innovative ways to save water and energy, which are both very important resources now and for the years to come. RAK Energy Innovation Competition was launched to increase awareness among the general public of Ras Al Khaimah. It acts as an enabler of Ras Al Khaimah Energy Efficiency and Renewables Strategy 2040, established under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, targeting 30% energy savings, 20% water savings, and 20% contribution of electricity from renewable sources by 2040.
